Bude Choral Society - A brief history
It
all started when … … a few like-minded musical people met in the choir vestry of Bude Central Methodist Church on 17th October, 1951 to consider forming the Bude Choral Society. The membership fee was fixed at 2/6d (12½p) per annum, members purchased their own music and it was decided that the first performance should be Edward German's Merrie England which was performed in March 1952 in the Headland Pavilion (Now closed but previously was JJ's Bar and The Break Night Club). |
John Hobbs - our Musical Director and Conductor since 1969. John was Director of Music at St. Petroc's School, Bude for many years, sings with Duchy Opera and New Cornwall Opera, and plays the organ at Weare Gifford Parish Church. He is also Musical Director and Conductor of both North Devon Choral Society and South Devon Choir |

The
founder members were: Mr George Fitzgeorge-Parker (President) Mr. H.A. Lomax (Chairman) Mr. T.S Petherick (Secretary) Mr H. Walters (Treasurer) Mrs. F.E. Carter (Conductor) Miss K.B. Trott (Pianist) |

Merrie England, which produced a profit of £10.7s.1d. (£10.35) was followed by Mendelssohn's Elijah and the concert version of Smetana's Bartered Bride. However, library copies of the music were hired from Plymouth Public Library, so that … ”no member of the choir would suffer hardship on being requested to purchase his/her music”. BCS
has gone from strength to strength, particularly under the leadership
of their present Musical Director, John Hobbs,
who has been resident conductor since 1969, with a gap between 1982 -
1988. Current members come from as far away as Bideford, Black Torrington, Milton Damerel, Ashwater and Launceston for rehearsals. The Choir aims to perform at least two concerts a year, around Easter and late Autumn/Christmas, but joins other choirs when invited, particularly for 'scratch' performances in aid of various charities. During the past twenty years the Choir has sung with Torrington, Holsworthy, Launceston, Tintagel and Truro Cathedral choirs. The
repertoire is fairly varied and a sample of music sung over the
years includes: In October 2005, BCS organised a Singing Day with John Rutter, a truly inspirational event attended by over 300 singers from Cornwall, Devon and further afield. Click here to see full report and photo. |

For most recent concerts, the Society has had the good fortune to engage the expert services of David Robinson, (FRAM, B.Mus, FRCO, Hon.RCM) at either the organ or keyboard, depending on which is available at the various venues where the Choir performs.
New members are always welcome and no audition is necessary. Have a look at our Join Us page - or contact BCS Secretary (see details on the Contact Us page). |
